Embracing New Life in Christ

Now that spring is here, it has given some opportunities to go enjoy the outdoors.  I was recently walking around a park and was noticing grass and new plants that were pushing their way up through the layer of decaying fallen leaves that covered the ground.  This is important for their survival.  The plants have to get past those dead leaves in order to gain sunshine.  If not, then they will die.

This image prompted me to think about my own life.  In Romans 6, Paul talks about our old sinful life as being dead.  When we became Christ followers, we embraced a new life in Christ.  The problem though is that our sinful life has a way of coming back.  Sometimes there are aspects of sin that we enjoy so we choose to hold on to them.  Other times, there are bad habits that we have due to painful experiences in our life that we just don’t want to deal with.

Dead weight will hold us back

Either way, they become dead weight that hold us back from truly being free in Christ.  It made me ask the question, “Is there dead weight in my life that I need to shake off and leave behind in order to follow Jesus?”

This is a good question for each of us to ask.  I know that for me, there is a lot of pride, anger, and worldliness that comes to mind.  The more I hold onto those things, the less able I am to fully embrace life to fullest through Jesus.  Time for me to do some soul care and leave those things behind.
