Don’t Forget the Radio

One of my favorite things in which God uses an everyday object to bring a spiritual lesson to mind.

On Sunday mornings, we have been looking at the theme of Spiritual War.  Paul uses the image of a Roman soldier to talk about the kind of defenses that God has given us in conflict against Satan.  Last Sunday, Carla Doll joined us on stage and demonstrated what modern day armor looks like for a police / sheriff’s officer.  I asked her in first service what she thought was the most important part of the armor and she responded by pointing out her radio.  If she ever was in a dangerous situation, then she could easily call in back-up.

It struck me that the Romans didn’t have a form of radio included with their military armor.  It is a modern invention.  Paul doesn’t talk about it as being apart armor of God in Ephesians 6:14-17.  However, he follows up in verse 18 by saying, “and pray in the Spirit in all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.”  Prayer is our way of communicating with God.  It is our radio.  God loves us so much that when we find ourselves in a difficult situation, we can speak to him and he listens to our prayers.  We have an open channel to throne room of God.

I know that I often take the gift of prayer for granted.  We think of prayer as just a part of being a Christian.  I forget that it is a gift from God that is an essential part of spiritual victory.  I neglect that gift at my own peril.
